Redefining Rape? Seriously?

Okay, this is some messed up stuff.

According to Mother Jones, House Republicans will be introducing a new bill that would redefine what types of circumstances a woman would be eligible to receive federal money to pay for an abortion.

Basically if you’re raped it better have been forcible, because if it wasn’t you’re paying for your own abortion. Yup, they’re redefining rape. This.Fucking.Country.

We already have laws on the books that list rape, incest, and if the pregnancy endangers the welfare of the mother, as reasons a woman could receive federal assistance in paying for an abortion. But Republicans want to make it even more narrow, adding that it now must be “forcible rape” to qualify. Because being raped wasn’t completely traumatic enough, now they want victims to go into detail and describe everything that happened in order to determine whether or not they should receive money to help pay for their abortion.

Someone slipped you a roofie and you passed out and woke up to find you had been raped? Tough luck. That would NOT make you eligible to receive assistance in paying for an abortion if you find out you are pregnant and want to terminate it.

You’re a victim of incest and over the age of 18? Sorry no federal monies for you. You are going to carry that baby to full term and give birth to it. Who cares if it does serious mental/emotional damage to you and your child? Republicans certainly don’t care.

Weren’t these people screaming about small government and fixing the economy? Telling women what they can and can’t do with their bodies is clearly an example of small government…

Having an abortion is an extremely personal choice for a woman. You may not agree with it, but that doesn’t mean you can tell a woman who was raped, or is the victim of incest, that she does not have access to it if she chooses to terminate her pregnancy. I’ve never understood how men can tell women what they can and can’t do with their bodies.

Both Gawker and Mother Jones have pieces which offer much more information regarding this prime example of bullshit legislation. Check them out.
